Bluegrass Sundays continues at the Strasburg Theater, every Sunday afternoon from 2-5 pm.
This past week, we had the fabulous Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians make their return to the Strasburg Theater, and they did not disappoint. Sound Roots was on hand to kick things off, with one of the tightest sets we've seen to date. The Lost Indians really know how to put on a show up there, with Terry, Andy and the boys providing killer musicianship while supporting the talented Ms. Murphy.
Next week, there's a band coming out that Amanda works with too. They feature an additional female vocalist, Zena Barakat, and one amazing group. Called "By and By", this bunch has been ripping up the scene in NVA and DC, particularly at the Tiffany Tavern. They'll be marking their debut at the Strasburg Theater, so come on out and see how much fun Sunday Afternoons can be. By and By are at: myspace.com/byandbyband
The Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Shows have been making a very solid impression on a lot of new folks, and it's always nice to talk with them while listening to some beautiful Bluegrass Music. We've been having visitors from Washington, DC, Charlottesville, across the borders in Maryland and Pennsylvania, not to mention deepest West Virginia. These folks all vary in age and background, but everybody says the same thing- what an amazing venue! With a bit more publicity, coupled with the existing word of mouth, we should be seeing some very respectable crowds by the time football season is over. * I doubt we'll be having any shows on Super Bowl Sunday ; )
For those of you who've been asking, we should have some flyers ready at this week's show. I've been pushing to get us mentioned on WAMU radio, out of American University, and they've been kind enough to help us out. Les Irby continues to be a pillar of the Bluegrass Community over at 96.9 WSIG, and is always willing to chat about the local and regional talent coming through our community. Tune in every Saturday from 3-9 and on Sunday afternoons as well.
Hopefully, we'll be seeing a few more national Bluegrass acts coming to the theater for some bigger shows. I've heard requests for Doyle Lawson, Tim O'Brien, The Bluegrass Brothers, Nothin' Fancy and a whole bunch of others.
If you know someone who'd like to take part in the Sunday Bluegrass shows, just ask them to email me at strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com. Lastly, if you are computer literate, and would like to help spread the word on the Bluegrass Sundays, please let me know and we'll get you in the loop. Message boards, Bluegrass magazines, website and such, all help to get the word out. If you can't do that, just tell a friend!
See you on Sunday.
~Joe
ps: Starship Ed has been putting together some very interesting projects on Saturday afternoons. Independent and rare films, live musical soundtracks to silent classics, art shows, and all manner of goings on. Check out the calendar and tune in for some of that. It's an 'alternative to the mundane' and I say it's about time we had something like this in the area!

Greetings, Bluegrass Fans! First off, to the Gold Heart Bluegrass Band, I'd like to say thank you so much for braving the weather and coming out to play for us at the Theater today. What a fantastic band! The Gold sisters; Analise (18), Jocelyn (14), and Shelby (12) were simply astounting once again, treating the audience to back to back sets of mostly original music that had us forgetting all about their young age. It was truly a family matter as they even had their little brother and sister out on stage, joining in and not missing a beat! Now, I could go on and on about those clear tight harmonies that come washing over the listener in a virtual lake of calm serenity. Or I could talk for half an hour about the playing - which is not half bad either. They're just an all round solid band. All of the members, including Dad on bass, put forth a simple and beautiful sound, made surprisingly full when you realize they were missing their banjo player. But what really gets you about this music is the sheer beauty and depth of the originals, which immediately sound like they've been a part of bluegrass lore for a good many years. And here's the kicker: all of these wonderful songs stem from 14 year old Jocelyn Gold, who seems to have a knack for writing from the heart and making you feel it's been that way forever. You get the sense that these girls just love playing together, and they're clearly on their way up! Watch for them again on our March calendar. www.GoldHeartBluegrass.comNext week, December 23rd we have a very special OPEN BLUEGRASS JAM at the Strasburg Theater. This FREE ADMISSION SHOW will really help ring in the holiday season with good music, good people and good cheer. Tell your friends! Folks, if you are looking for some family friendly entertainment, with a very welcoming atmosphere, make it a point to head on out to the Strasburg Theater this Sunday afternoon, starting at 2 pm for our Open Bluegrass Jam. AND if you are a bluegrass performer, or you know someone who's been looking for an opportunity to play on a big stage with full sound system provided, this is it! *Special Announcement: This will be our last Bluegrass Sunday show before we take a short winter break. But fear not! Bluegrass Sundays will resume on February 10th with the fantastic "Chesham Creek" featuring Donnie Knuckles and Gary Keel. We also have the fabulous "Sound Roots" with the entire band taking the stage on February 17th. I for one am looking forward to this. Then on Sunday, February 24th, we're pleased to announce the debut of "SONRISE", a wonderful gospel bluegrass outfit based out of Fredricksburg, VA. SONRISE has been around for over 20 years, and one listen to these vocal harmonies and you'll know why! They've also got one heck of a banjo player in Larry Jett. You can look for more appearances from such bands as Flint Hollow and The Deer Creek Boys in the very near future! Lastly, I want to thank my friends and bluegrass lovers who've continued to support the Bluegrass Scene every week. We're getting the word out, and people are talking. On the forums at World Wide Bluegrass, Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine, WSIG Radio with Les Irby, Tonia and Bob McConchie, Gator, Tonia Harding, to Mark B. over at ShenandoahMusic.com, Mr. Greg Tutwiler at Americana Rhythms Magazine, and of course the cast and crew at the Strasburg Theater (Robbie, Laurie and Freddy) not to mention the wonderful folks who continue to stream in 'for the first time' and are so blown away by this magnificent venue. I look forward to your continued assistance as we work to bring this Bluegrass Community together. Joe Herbert Ok, Let's review: December 23rd: Open Stage Bluegrass!! January through Feb 3rd - Winter Break! February 10th- Bluegrass Sundays resumes w/ Chesham Creek! Please send any inquiries to strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com or call 540-975-0813. See you on Sunday

Bluegrass Sundays Returns

Well folks, the Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Series returned with a bang this week, featuring two sensational groups taking the stage to much fanfare. After a short winter break, Chesham Creek, along with friends "Homemade Jam" ushered in the return of what looks like a very promising Bluegrass Series for months to come.
With an all new look and feel, many of the bluegrass regulars where surprised and delighted to take part in the Theater's lunch and dinner buffet offerings, all at a very reasonable price. Music fans were able to select from a wide and varied choice of delectable items, and everyone seemed to be in very high spirits throughout the afternoon.
Opening act "Homemade Jam" treated us to a wonderful 50 minute set of classics, old timers and foot stompers, which really got the crowd up and paying attention.
After a short break, Chesham Creek took the stage to get everyone right back in the mood with their feel-good setlist, consisting of mostly original music by the talented songwriter Donny Lee Nuckles. With a strong emphasis on Virginia's heritage, Nuckles, along with the irrepressible guitarist Gary Keel kept the folks involved and informed, with a very natural and professional stage presence. Chesham Creek's lineup was loaded down with talent as well, with the likes of Liz Monseur on guitar and vocals, Becca Isaac on vocals, Josh Butler on mandolin, and Patty Embrey on the stand up bass. All were in fine form as the bluegrass fans clapped and joined in the fun.
We have another fantastic show for you next Sunday, when the sensational Sound Roots return with a full band lineup. They'll also have some very special guests opening the show for them, so come on out early, get yourselves some good home cooked food, and enjoy the sounds of these extraordinarily talented National and Regional Bluegrass Bands!
See you on Sunday!

My hero and bluegrass idol Charlie Moore would have been 73 years old today. Two days a year i shed a tear...Feb 13th and Dec 24th the date of Charlie's passing. I don't think i can relay in words just what Charlie and his legacy mean to me. My entire musical career has been based upon the premise of keeping his name alive. Please take a moment to remember Charlie this week and everyday. We will be doing a number of Charlie's tunes up at Joe Val this weekend in remembrance. Well now, what can I say about yesterday afternoon's outstanding performance by "SONRISE"? Honestly, this had to be one of the clearest, most professional and best sounding shows we've had thus far at the Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Series.
Their gospel bluegrass songs had everyone in the theater up and rollickin' to the infectious tunes. You could just feel the good vibes resounding througout the venue. Not only that, but when SONRISE dips into their deep well of acapela tunes, they let you know why this group's been getting away with this for over 25 years!
I'd like to say a few words about the theater's staff, and I'll start with my favorite; the sound man. Througout the afternoon's performance by SONRISE, soundman Robbie Sullivan was singled out for big praise from the fellas on stage, and they even offered to take him on their tour bus with them! (Not sure if he accepted, but I suppose we'll know soon enough)
I know I've said this before, but without a good soundman, even the best musicians can sound horrible. Robbie is to be commended again for doing such an amazing job at the board, no matter what style or genre of music we throw at him! If you want proof, we've got it on plenty of recorded CD's from the many shows produced at the Theater.
I also want to thank the Strasburg Theater's Sunday staff for doing such a great job with the lunch buffet. Panos, Samantha, Nicki, and Tina have all been working very hard at putting on a delicious and sumptuous buffet each week, and it just seems to get better and better every Sunday.
Yesterday, I overheard a lot of folks talking about how good the food is, how much they love the theater and what a great improvement these folks (owners) have done with it. Hearing these sort of comments really does make a difference, and the team effort really helps send a positive message to the new comers who've never been to the theater before. Next week, it'll be a bit more rockin' when the fabulous 'Travers Chandler and Avery County' take the stage for their brand of Baltimore Bluegrass in the style of Charlie Moore and Carter Stanley. Make your reservation early, as the place is pickin' up and preferred seating is limited. And be sure to check the events calendar for all upcoming shows.
See you on Sunday!

We just got word that Travers Chandler has been hospitalized with pneumonia, and will not be able to make the show this Sunday afternoon. We hope that he'll make a speedy recovery, and perhaps we'll all be able to see Travers and Avery County in the weeks ahead.
I am happy to say that after a bit of scrambling, we've been fortunate to have Grassy Ridge filling in on such short notice! Based out of Harrisonburg, VA, Grassy Ridge has been together for some time now, and brings a wealth of bluegrass experience to the stage. Pam and the boys will be kicking out the tunes for everyone tomorrow afternoon.
See you then!

Thanks so much to our friends in "Flint Hollow" for turning out one of the biggest Bluegrass crowds thus far. This past Sunday was a dynamite show, as Flint Hollow turned in a fine performance once again. They even had an 11 year old dobro player that's gotta be seen to be believed.
"Gavin" really put it on that crowd, and had us all eatin' out of his hand as he jammed out on that dobro like a seasoned pro. He's even agreed to come out and do a short set before the next Ralph Stanley show coming up in June. Watch for this kid- I'm telling you, he's on his way to the big time!
We have another sensational show lined up for this Sunday as the Gold Heart Bluegrass Band returns to the Strasburg for another amazing performance. If you haven't seen the Gold Sisters sing their flawless harmonies, you need to make a point of gettin' out here this Sunday afternoon. The songwriting that stems from 14 year old Jocelyn Gold is something to be marvelled at. They'll also be appearing on WSIG radio the evening before, so be sure and tune in to 96.9 with Les Irby so you can catch a taste of this outstanding bluegrass group.
Another thanks to Les Irby for having Flint Hollow on air this past Saturday evening. Les has been doing a fine job helping us with the Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Series, and we can't thank him enough. Don't forget to tune in to his Bluegrass show every Saturday from 3-9 pm, and again on Sunday mornings!
In the meantime, please tell a friend about the Bluegrass Series, featuring a fantastic 'all you can eat' buffet, plus a wonderful show, all for only $14.50. For more information, email strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com or call 540-975-0813.
